Assorted Civil War related Ephemera and letters. 1st item: 1876 letter or transcription of a letter by Maryland Governor John Lee Carroll to Maj. Genl. Fitzhugh Lee relating a conversation with Robert E. Lee about Gen. Longstreet's role in losing the battle of Gettysburg because he failed to follow orders. Note: this letter is accompanied by a typewritten transcription and a small catalog clipping indicating it may have actually been hand-transcribed by CSA Gen. Jubal Early. 2nd item: "Orphan Brigade" related letter from 1907 penned by Lt. G.H. Burton of the 4th Kentucky in response to a question about the Brigade and its armament. "I had 20 men in my sharp shooter corps but only 11 with guns to which your Confederate order refers. The others were armed with telescope guns… " Burton himself was awarded a medal of honor for gallant and conspicuous conduct" for commanding the Ky Brigade sharpshooters during the Atlanta Campaign (1864). 3rd item: a letter from H.F. Merrell of Carrollton, GA, January 20, 1861, regarding his thoughts on secession and war. Note: Local tradition holds that Merrell was so moved by the sight of Confederate soldiers returning from Appomattox past his residence, singing "Dixie", that he exclaimed the road should be named "Dixie Street," the name it bears today. (Source: Historical Marker on Dixie Street in Carrollton, GA). 4th and 5th items: Confederate pay records signed by Lt. A.W. Wilson and W. T or S. Morris, both of Company C, 34th Georgia regiment. 6th item: Nov. 2, 1863 handwritten letter from a W. W. Worthington "near Clinton" to his family regarding sending leather for making boots and requesting blankets. Mentions being near Vicksburg; no mention of battles. 7th item: 1 Port Royal Experiment related order slip. 8th item; 1 Confederate loyalty oath signed by Joseph Mood with travel pass on the other side to visit Petersburg. 9th-11th items: 3 Reprints of Confederate Prayer Books.12th item: Civil War era Cabinet card depicting an illustration of the naval battle between the Monitor and Merrimac (illegible ink inscription en verso). 13th item: J.B. Foster signed drawing depicting the "Rock Island Barrel Detail," Confederate prisoners removing privy deposits of their fellow soldiers who had joined the Yankee Army, dated 1904. 14th item: Currier & Ives political cartoon, "Blockade on the Connecticut Plan," 1862.
