Shirley Thomson Smith (American, b. 1929) bronze bust of a woman. Signed and dated "Shirley T. Smith / 1993 4/25 N.A.W.A." to base. Mounted on a marble and wood base. Sculpture – 15" H x 9" W. Overall – 18" H x 9" W. Late 20th century. Biography: Shirley Thomson Smith is known for her stoic portrayals of Native American, Mexican, and African women. Strongly influenced by her travels through the Southwest, specifically her experiences with Navajo women, she aims to portray these womenâs strength, grace, and peace with a sense of presence and motion. In 1985, she was accepted as a member of the National Academy of Western Art (N.A.W.A.), only the fourth woman to have been admitted. CONDITION: Overall good condition. 2" hairline crack across and down marble base at back.
