Two (2) Robert Prowse (American, 1858-1934) watercolor and gouache on board cover art illustrations for the Buffalo Bill Library, Nickel Weekly novels, by Prentiss Ingraham, published by Street and Smith, New York, circa 1902-18, 3 items total. Includes: one (1) for BUFFALO BILL AT COFFIN CAMP, No. 576 and one (1) for MUSTANG MERLE'S GRAND WIND-UP, No. 645. Both signed with initial "R.P." lower right, No. 645 with additional inscriptions, top and bottom margins. Also includes one (1) additional illustration for page 6 of THE DEATH CHARM; OR, THE LADY IN VELVET, No. 73, unsigned but possibly by Robert Prowse with inscriptions to margins and en verso (obscured by mat). Typed description of the inscriptions of the scenes, en verso of No. 73 and No. 576. All items housed and matted under glass in wooden frames. Sights ranging in size from 8 1/2" H x 9" W to 13 3/4" H x 9 3/4" W. Frames ranging in size from 12 3/4" x 13 3/8" H to 18 1/4" H x 14 1/4" W.
PROVENANCE: The Collection of Michael Janton, Findlay, Ohio.
CONDITION: No. 73 with toning, areas of loss, largest 1 1/4" x 1 1/2" to corners, hinge mounted to mat with masking tape. Other items not examined outside of frame, exposed areas of margins with toning, pinprick holes, general handling wear to be expected from manner of use.
