The brooch is 1 1/2 x 1/2" in size and has a weight of 8.60 grams. Gross weight of the lot is 83.41 grams.
PROVENANCE: By descent in the family of American socialite and businesswoman Lelia Sinclair Gordon Dickey (1899-1989). She was the great-granddaughter of wealthy Virginia planter Bazil Gordon, owner of Wakefield Manor Farm, and in 1916 she served as a bridesmaid at the first marriage of her second cousin, Wallis Simpson (for whom King Edward VIII gave up his throne). She ran the Lelia Noyes Dress Shop on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC., for many years. Her husbands included Newbold Noyes, associate editor of the Washington Evening Star.
CONDITION: Narrower brooch has a small area on each side that has been broken or shaved off, suggesting it may have been converted from another form.
