Robert Hopkin (Scottish/American, 1832-1909) oil on board painting depicting a rocky shoreline seascape with turbulent waters and ship on the horizon. Signed lower left. Housed in an elaborate carved gilt and gesso frame. Old label en verso. Previously exhibited Kresge Art Center, Michigan State University in the 1970s. Sight – 11" H x 21" W. 21" H x 31" W. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): Born in Scotland, Hopkin emigrated to the U.S. in 1843 and became a resident marine and landscape painter of Detroit. He was known for marine subjects and decorated the interiors of buildings and passenger steamboats in many cities. His best known works were his interior decorations for the Detroit Opera House and the New Orleans Cotton Exchange. Condition: Some minor losses and touch up to frame. Some darkening of varnish. Faint scratch upper right quadrant.
