Two (2) carved wooden figures, including Black Americana doll. 1st item: Ludie Pennyman Amos (Georgia/Tennessee, b. 1935) folk art mixed media doll, titled "Esther", depicting a young African American girl with a white ribbon in her braided hair wearing a white dress, white stockings, and black shoes; mounted to a wooden base. Signed "'Glimpses' by Ludie / Ludie P. Amos" with a gold sticker to underside of base. Includes a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Amos with title and date "1995" and a copy of a letter written by Amos about the doll, dated May 27, 1998. Overall with base: 14 3/4" H x 6" W. 2nd item: Continental carved wood and polychrome painted angel or putto sculpture rendered in the form of a young male child with his hands on his hips and two (2) removable wings to his back, mounted to a wooden base. Unsigned. Overall with base: 15" H x 10" W. 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of F. Hamilton Hazlehurst, longtime chair of the Vanderbilt University Art Department.
CONDITION: 1st item: Overall very good condition with scattered areas of minute staining to dress. 2nd item: Overall good condition with natural age shrinkage, craquelure to polychrome.
