Arthur Burdett Frost (Pennsylvania/California, 1851-1928) watercolor and gouache on board illustration, “A Provincial Politician,” 1894. Published to accompany Octave Thanet’s article “The People That We Serve, Sketches of American Types,” Scribner’s Magazine XVI, no. 2, (Aug. 1894). A man with a mustache wears a suit and holds a tophat in his left hand. Signed in pencil, lower right. Loose magazine page with illustration taped to backing. Housed under glass in a painted and giltwood frame. Sight: 13 3/8 in. H x 8 3/8 in. W. Frame: 18 in. H x 12 3/4 in. W. Also includes the compilation book Scribner’s Magazine, Published Monthly With Illustrations, Volume XVI July – December (New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1894), with article and printed illustration. 7 in. x 9 3/4 in. x 1 3/4 in.
CONDITION: Illustration in overall very good, with old tape residue visible at lower left and above man’s left shoulder, likely from publication process. Not examined out of frame. Book with partial separation to binding, otherwise very good condition.
