Clement Read Strudwick (North Carolina, 1900-1958) oil on canvas three-quarter length portrait of an older woman, dressed in formal gown and cape. The sitter is possibly one of the daughters of Jane Erwin Yeatman Bell and Senator John Benjamin Bell (1796-1869) of Nashville, TN. Signed and dated '29 lower right. Original gilt gesso frame. Sight: 51" H x 38" W. Frame: 63-1/2" H x 51" W. Biography: Clement Strudwick was born in TN and spent most of his life in Hillsborough, NC. He spent two years at the University of North Carolina. During the 1920s he was a pupil of George Luks in NYC and he later traveled to Paris to study for a year under Louis Francois Biloul. By 1933 his portraits appeared in Boston, NY, Philadelphia and throughout the South. Provenance: The estate of Jean A. Yeatman and Harry C. Yeatman, formerly of Hamilton Place Plantation (near Columbia, Tennessee). CONDITION: Overall good condition with surface grime. Frame with some losses to gilding, old insect damage to back of frame.
