Attr. Jan Jacobus Matthys Damschroeder (also spelled Damschroder, Dutch, 1825-1905), oil on canvas genre scene depicting a young family in a cottage interior; the infant appears to nurse or doze while the husband gazes lovingly at his seated wife. Light through a nearby window illuminates a table with dishes and rag. Signed lower left and inscribed en verso: "This undersigned declares that this picture has been painted by himself to the order of Mr. (Alfred Huyreth?) of Antwerp – J.M. Damschroder, the Hague, 1878". Likely original wide giltwood molded frame. Sight: 17" H x 13-1/2" W. Framed: 23" H x 20" W. Biography: Jan Jacobus Matthys Damschroeder was born in Germany but spent most of his life painting in Amsterdam. He seems to have specialized in genre scenes which often feature children or images of domestic harmony. Provenance: the estate of Lucille Svitzer Brady (Mrs. Frank B. Brady), formerly of Annapolis, Maryland. Condition: Overall craquelure. 2" patch in upper right quadrant near center (background). Verso of canvas has been covered with a board (cut out to reveal inscription) and the canvas has not been examined under this board. Some wear to frame.
