Lloyd A. Freeman (California/Tennessee, 18741930) oil on canvas portrait of A. Lafayette Freeman, nephew of Enoch Lloyd Branson. Portrait depicts the subject with moustache and wearing spectacles, dressed in a suit and tie, against a neutral background. Signed and dated upper left corner "Lloyd Freeman, 1917". Inscription en verso reads "Portrait of A. Lafayette Freeman. Painted by His Brother, And Presented To Him In Deep Appreciation Of His Many Noble Qualities. July 22 / 17 Knoxville, Tenn". Lloyd and A. Lafayette Freeman were both nephews of Knoxville artist Enoch Lloyd Branson (Tennessee, 1853-1925). Mother was Susan E. Freeman (Branson) daughter of Enoch Branson, sister of Enoch Lloyd Branson. Housed in giltwood frame. Sight – 23 3/4" H x 19 5/8" W. Framed – 27 1/4" H x 23 1/4" W. Also included in lot is the book "A History of Painting" by Haldane Macfall, Vol. II The Renaissance in Venice, Published by Dana Estes and Co., Boston, #92/1000. From the library of Lloyd Branson and signed by the artist on the front page. Hardbound in green canvas. 11 1/4" H x 8 1/2" W x 1 3/4" D. Provenance: Descendant of Branson family. CONDITION: Mold/grime scattered on external surface of painting. Few small areas of paint loss around edges of painting. Book in poor condition. Canvas spine of book completely gone, pages frayed, irregular.
