Sixth plate size tintype photograph of a Civil War Union soldier, likely from Southern Kentucky, holding a Springfield percussion rifle; gilt highlights to buttons and belt buckle; reverse “52” on the front of his wide brimmed hat. Set in half Union case with embossed brass mat. Case: 3 5/8 in. H x 3 1/8 in. W. The “52” on the soldier’s hat likely refers to the 52nd Kentucky Mounted Infantry Regiment, which was organized at Franklin and Scottsville, KY, and served the Union Army during the Civil War under the command of Col. John H. Grider from 1863-65. The regiment was active in operations against guerilla raids including those of Nathan Bedford Forrest in Southern and Central Kentucky, and saw action at battles mostly in the area including New Hope and Cynthiana.
