Set of three (3) graduated Scott County, Virginia baskets signed by Jesse Jones (b. 1907). All buttocks style comprised of white oak, rib-type split construction with handles secured by nails at the rim. All signed in pencil "Jesse Jones" on the handle, the largest additionally dated 11-83. Ranging in size from 9" H x 10 1/2" W to 13 1/2" H x 14 3/4" W. 20th century. Biography: Jesse Jones was a mountain basket weaver who lived in the isolated mountains of Scott County, VA. His work is featured in the book BASKETS AND BASKET MAKERS IN SOUTHERN APPALACHIA, written by John Rice Irwin (1982).
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Donley and Eunice Hill, Andersonville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: All baskets in overall good condition with light grime. Largest basket with losses to weavers to one side of one handle, oxidation noted around some nails. Medium basket with wear to handle, some oxidation to nails. Smallest basket with losses to weavers to one side.
