John Egerton Christmas Piper (Illinois/United Kingdom, 1903-1992) mixed media abstract painting, watercolor and gouche on grid paper, signed lower right "John Piper". Adhered en verso is a note from the artist with printed address Fawley Bottom Farmhouse near Henley-On-Thames, reading "Dear Mr. Brumbaugh, I am a great putter-aside of letters, & I'm afraid I put aside yours of last July. However, I've got around to it at last! All Good wishes, Yours sincerely, John Piper". Clarksville TN framing label en verso. Painting is float mounted on an ivory mat in a black narrow molded frame. Painting – 4" H x 7 1/4" W. Framed – 9" H x 12" W. Provenance: The Estates of Olen Bryant and the late Vanderbilt University art professor Thomas Brumbaugh, Clarksville, Tennessee. CONDITION: Paper has small tears along upper edge consistent with being torn from a notebook or sketchbook, otherwise excellent condition.
