Coastal watercolor landscape by Richard Clarke (American/Tennessee 1923 – 1997) depicting an absract Maine coastal scene. Signed and dated in the painting lower left, "Clarke, '66". Also titled and dated lower right margin "9-10-66 – Marshall Point, ME". Unframed. Sight – 16" H x 21 3/4" W. Overall – 18 1/8" H x 23" W. Biography: Richard Clarke was one of the early members of the University of Tennesseeís art faculty. He is often associated with the "Knoxville Seven" , a group of progressive artists connected to the University of Tennessee which included Robert Birdwell, C. Kermit Ewing, Joanna Higgs, Walter H. Stevens and Carl Sublett. He often found inspiration for his watercolor abstractions in the natural world around him. Condition: Overall very good condition, some toning to paper.
