3 works on paper by Eugene (Egon Vitalis) Biel Bienne (Austria/New York/Nashville, 1902-1969). Includes one (1) black and white ink/charcoal expressionist face and form, and one (1) gouache and watercolor nude figure with face resting in hands; each signed with monogram E in lower corners and catalog numbers written in pencil en verso, each 24" x 18", plus one (1) mixed media collage featuring seven small pastel and watercolor studies, each about 3" x 4", taped to a black sheet of paper, with pasted titles, 11" x 14" overall. Biography: Eugene (Egon Vitalis) Biel Bienne was a painter, illustrator, etcher, lithographer, writer and teacher, regarded as one of Europe's most promising expressionists before World War II forced him to emigrate to the United States. For a complete biography, see the excellent article in Nashville Arts Magazine: http://nashvillearts.com/2010/06/biel-bienne-the-forgotten-master/.
PROVENANCE: Estate of Gertude S. Caldwell, Nashville.
CONDITION: 1st two items: toning and handling creases, overall very good condition. Collage has losses to black paper. Encapsulated in protective covering; note en verso from conservator states it has been deacidified but with no attempt to remove the tape as it would destroy the art.
