John Wells Stancliff (American/Connecticut, 1814 – 1879) oil on panel seascape titled en verso "Gay Head light from near Cuttyhunk", depicting a lone sailboat in the foreground at sea with the Gay Head lighthouse at Martha's Vineyard and other sailboats visible in the far left background. Unsigned. Professionally conserved in 1991, conservation label en verso along with illegible inscription. Housed in an antique gilt wood and gesso frame with beaded edge. Sight: 10 1/2" H x 19 1/2" W. Framed: 15" H x 24" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of John Z. C. Thomas, Knoxville, TN.
CONDITION: Some slight warping to the panel; light craquelure to the sky area and the lower left quadrant. Professionally conserved in 1991, conservation report available on request. Frame with some minor scattered abrasions.
