German WWI Gewehr 98 bolt action rifle fitted with scope mounts for sniper configuration; offset to the left to allow use of stripper clips. Left side of receiver marked with serial # 3861 and “Gew. 98.” Top of receiver markings obscured by scope mount, however, it has the standard crown over script letter proofs on the right side of the receiver. Stamped “S” to top of barrel to indicate rechambering for rounded Spitzer bullets. Chambered in 7.92 x 57mm Mauser, with 29 1/4 in. barrel, fixed front sight and “roller coaster” rear sight. Replacement straight bolt handle (not turned down), but with stock trimmed to account for sniper bolt. Matching serial numbers on receiver, barrel, barrel bands, follower, floor plate, trigger guard, trigger guard screws, butt plate, front and rear sights, cleaning rod, and stock; bolt with mismatched serial. The right side of the stock with stamped double Crown Proof. Includes sawtooth “butcher back” bayonet, marked “Weyersberg / KirschBaum / & Cie / Solingen.” Bayonet 19 1/2 in. L; Rifle only overall 49 in. L.
CONDITION:
Excellent working condition; approx. 60% blued finish remains, furniture with light scratches and gouging; bore is clean with visible rifling; rear sling swivel absent. Scope not present.
