1st item: Band sampler, likely British, appears to be wool on linen, featuring alphabets in various stitches interspersed with bands of geometric patterns and dated 1748 on 4th line. Float mounted in a woodgrain frame. Sight: 16 1/2" H x 8" W. Framed: 23" H x 15" W. 2nd item: Band/Family Register sampler dated 1765, probably Scottish, silk on linen, with alphabet, crown, and geometric motifs rendered in running, cross, and eyelet stitch and names Mary Bell / Peggy Anderson / James Anderson and Janet Berndesay. Float mounted in a woodgrain frame. Sight: 16" H x 7 1/2" W. Framed: 23" H x 14 1/2" W. 3rd item: Continental motif sampler, silk on fine gauge linen. Matted in a birdseye maple veneer frame.Sight: 17" H x 7 1/2" W. Framed: 26" H x 16" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Patricia Kiegel, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: Some thread loss to dark blue thread, minor fading to other thread, light ground discoloration. 2nd item: Tiny holes to ground at upper corners, possible thread loss lower right corner, light fading to thread and ground discoloration, 2" scratch to frame. 3rd item: Ground discoloration and some losses to black thread, scattered small stains, tiny loss to frame. None of the samplers examined out of frame.
