H.D. Gremke (American, 1860 – 1939) large oil on canvas landscape depicting a figure on horseback herding five cows and a calf across a shallow river; two mountains or hills rise in the background against an overcast sky. Signed lower left. Antique giltwood and composition molded frame. 35" x 59" sight, 47 1/2" x 71" framed. Inscription on back notes the painting was conserved by Roger Qualls in 2003. Biography (Courtesy of AskArt: The Artists' Bluebook): Henry Dietrich (Dick) Gremke was born in San Francisco, the son of a German immigrant gold miner. He studied in San Francisco at the School of Design under Raymond Yelland. Gremke was known for his landscape, floral, genre and mural painting, and was also an able photographer. Provenance: the estate of Margaret Pollock, Brentwood, Tennessee. Condition: Moderate allover craquelure, a few scattered small spots of inpainting visible under blacklight. 1/4" hole in sky area.
