Joan Miro (Spanish, 1893-1983), Ubu’s Childhood / L’Enfance D’Ubu, lithograph in colors on Arches wove paper, pencil signed lower right and numbered lower left, 1/120, 1975. Ivory and black mat with contemporary black frame and non-glare glass. Sight: 12-1/2″ x 19-1/2″, Framed: 18-1/2″ x 25-1/2″. Provenance: Estate of Letha Cote, Palm Springs, CA., purchased from Wood Gallery in Coronado, California, 1993. This work was part of a series released in 1975, published 1975 by Teriade/Mourlot, Paris, which included 120 impressions and 20 hors commerce. The series is based on a play “Ubu Roi (Ubu the King) by Alfred Jarry, which premiered in 1896, and is considered a precursor of the Theatre of the Absurd and Surrealism.
