Photographic carbon print of President Abraham Lincoln (1809 – 1865) taken from a retouched negative, similar to a rare photograph taken by Christopher Smith German in Springfield, IL, on Saturday, February 9, 1861, when Lincoln was President-elect. This print, or a similar print also owned by Frank A. Brown, Esq., of Minneapolis, MN was reproduced in the book ?"Abraham Lincoln" by William Eleroy Curtis, published by J.B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, PA, 1902, on p. 124. Additionally, the back of the framed print has a type written page signed by Frank A. Brown. Brown writes how the photographic print came into his father's possession and the history of the print's use by artists and authors in their works about Lincoln. The page also contains an ink written note from Brown's mother, "From Mother, Wishing you many happy returns of the day, March 25, 1900". Provenance: Private Arkansas Collection. Image 5 1/2" H x 4" W, framed 10 5/8" x 12 1/2". Condition: Image in overall very good condition with some toning, print is glued down to cardstock. Toning and stains to type written and ink signed note on back of the frame.
