19th Century, possibly Maryland, center medallion quilt, hand-pieced and hand quilted, features an original layout of Ohio Star and Flying Geese pattern blocks. Rendered with light medium and blue fabrics that show evidence of being home-dyed as well as dark and hand-woven cotton fabrics resembling denim. The white cotton backing is joined with a knife edge. The 20" x 20" center block has an embroidered description reading "M&B' JAN, 1840", and additional illegible signature. 77 1/4" H x 86" W. Note: Professional examination of fabrics suggests this quilt dates circa 1870. The quilted in inscription may commemorate a wedding anniversary.
PROVENANCE: The Collection of Richard H. and Kathleen L. Hulan.
CONDITION: Solid black fabric used throughout is brittle with additional areas of scattered minor staining and discoloration.
