Carved ivory okimono figure of a man holding a potted bonsai plant in one hand and a hoe in the other, a basket attached to his waist. Condition: slight separation at figure's left arm, hairlines to face, losses and possible repair to Bonsai. 11" H x 3 3/4" W base. Japanese, Meiji period (late 19th to early 20th c.). Provenance: purchased by George Mitchell (co-owner of Mitchell's Candy Store, Nashville) during the course of several trips to China and Japan in the late 19th-early20th century. Mitchell estate.
