Walter Hollis Stevens (Tennessee, 1927-1980) abstract oil on canvas diamond-oriented painting titled "Sky Split" depicting an image divided in half into blue and red segments by a vertical white line, the blue area filled with geometric forms and the red area containing purple segments. Signed and dated "Stevens '67" lower center. Titled and additionally signed and dated on stretcher en verso. Orientation instructions en verso of canvas. Housed in a simple wood frame. 39 3/4" H x 39 3/4" W. Framed: 40 12" H x 40 1/2" W. Biography: Walter Hollis Stevens was a member of the "Knoxville Seven" group of progressive artists and joined the University of Tennessee faculty in 1957. Much of his art was inspired by Tennessee and Maine scenery. He was instrumental in organizing the Knoxville Watercolor Society and the Deer Isle (Maine) Art Association. His work won 55 awards in the East and Midwest, and is in the collection of at least 18 museums. (Source: the University of Tennessee Library).
CONDITION: Overall good condition with some light grime. Some warping to the frame. A couple minor areas of abrasion with associated loss.
