American School, 19th century oil on canvas portrait of Judge Henry Dickinson of Columbia, Miss., father of United States Secretary of War, Jacob McGavock Dickinson. The middle-aged subject is depicted in three-quarter view with dark mustache and beard, wearing a black coat and tie with white shirt, against a deep red-brown background. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with carved corner decoration. Sight – 29 1/2"H x 24 1/2"W. Frame – 40"H x 35"W.
PROVENANCE: Descended in the family of the subject.
CONDITION: Professionally restored by Cumberland Art Conservation. Overall good condition. UV light reveals restored 2" scratch to face and a 1/2" scratch near nose, some small areas of scattered exfoliation with overpaint to background and lower left corner. Frame with some minor losses, regilt.
