Scarce William G. Bonner (Georgia, b. 1811) lithographed folding pocket map with original hand coloring, “Bonner’s Pocket Map of the State of Georgia / Complied by Wm. G. Bonner, Civil Engineer / Milledgeville,” 1855. With 1850 census information organized into “White” and Black” columns plus city and county names, geographical features, and railroads. Publication information along lower edge: “Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1854 by Wm. G. Bonner in the Clerks office of the District Court of Georgia.” Enclosed in a scrolling foliate border. Housed under glass in silvered wood frame with charcoal textile mat. Published by J. H. PROVENANCE:
Living Estate of Sally Johnson Harlan, by descent from her ancestor Dr. William Leroy Broun. Broun was a professor at the University of Georgia and later president at the Georgia Agricultural and Mechanical College (a branch of the University of Georgia) from 1872-1875. He later served as president of what is now known as Auburn University, 1882-1903.
CONDITION:
Some staining to center left, related to original case. With minor losses to central vertical fold line, from Baldwin to Irwin counties. Additional minor area of loss to census list, primarily in Habersham County line. Scattered, minor staining and foxing throughout.
