American school, second quarter 19th century, oil on canvas portrait depicting a dark haired gentleman attired in a black dress coat with white shirt and black necktie, seated at a desk writing with a white feather quill pen. Plain brown background. Unsigned with illegible inscriptions on frame in verso. Housed in a carved giltwood frame. Sight: 29 1/2" H x 24" W. Frame: 32 1/2" H x 27" W. 19th Century.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Overall light craquelure. Wax lining. Some filling to paint loss in the perimeter of the work, largest area approximately 3". Significant inpainting to the subject's clothing and elsewhere, visible under UV light inspection (see photos). Stretcher lines visible from front of canvas with some abrasion. Scattered minor flea bite losses. Frame with age cracks and minor losses to gilt.
