American School, circa 1830s, oil on canvas portrait of a lady with dark curled upswept hair and black dress, wearing a woven red silk cord around her neck, a diamond buckle or brooch, a red coral brooch, and dangling red coral earrings. Unsigned. Molded wood frame. Stretcher: 30″ H x 25″W. Frame: 36″h x 30 1/2″W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Sally Flowers Moody, Kentucky.
CONDITION: Painting has not been lined and needs restretching. Stretcher lines visible. Scattered faint streaks of a white substance around subject’s neckline and white residue to a 6″L area of background near right edge. Overall light craquelure, plus grime and yellowing to varnish layer. 1/2″ tear upper left corner edge; 3/4″ repair upper right corner edge. Later frame has wear and losses, particularly to the lower edge. No restoration apparent under UV light.
