John R. Ballator (American/Virginia, 1909-1967) oil on board painting depicting a nude woman seated on a chair and holding a blue cloth over her slightly parted legs, against an indistinct, painterly background. Signed upper left and inscribed "For JEP 5/44 – John Ballator." The wide molded wood frame with distressed surface has been lightly painted in a shade of blue similar to the blue used in the painting, possibly by the artist's own hand. Panel – 15 1/2"H x 12 1/2"W. Frame – 23 1/2"H x 20 1/2"W. Note: Artist John Ballator was known for his WPA murals including one at the Department of Justice Building in Washington, D.C. He also taught art at Hollins College in Virginia for over 30 years, and founded the Roanoke, Virginia Fine Arts Center.
CONDITION: Painting overall very good condition with just a few tiny scattered flakes. Wear and losses to paint on frame.
