Arthur William Woelfle (American, 1873-1936) oil on canvas painting titled "The Butterfly", depicting a young nude female seated on the edge of an indistinct surface and gazing at a yellow butterfly resting on her palm in her lap. The subject is illuminated by a warm light, and set against a vague background of earthy greens and reds. Signed "Arthur W. Woelfle" lower right. Partial Salmagundi Club paper label with title and artist name, en verso of canvas. Inscription with title and artist name, en verso of frame. Rococo-style molded giltwood frame with foliate flourish corners and central ornaments upon diapered ground; canvas covered sight edge. Sight: 29 1/2" H x 24 3/4" W. Framed: 39 3/4" H 34 5/8" W.
PROVENANCE: Private Williamson County, Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Frame with minute losses to gilding particularly at corners.
