English George III Cary’s Celestial Floor Globe, ca. 1799-1800. Three dimensional map of the heavens depicting various constellations, surrounded by a horizon ring with zodiac signs and months, and full brass meridian. Supported on a ring-turned walnut or mahogany tripod base with inlaid diamond design and spade feet and metal casters. Approx. 47 in. H x 27 in. diameter.
PROVENANCE:
The estate of Dr. Michael Spalding, Nashville, TN.
CONDITION:
Stand likely originally contained a compass below the pedestal which is now missing. The globe’s printed surface and the horizon ring are covered with a thin yellowed varnish which has begun to chip away, revealing the printed white paper beneath, and there are scattered losses to the printed paper, primarily at gore lines and on horizon ring. 2 in. crack to lower pole, other small cracks, abrasions, uneven fading, and signs of wear.
