Marjorie Johnson Lee (Texas, 1911-1997) oil on canvas abstract landscape painting titled "Cliff" rendered in brightly hued impasto depicting a rocky cliffside having dense treeline in the upper right background. Signed "M. Lee" lower right. Additionally signed, dated "1978" and titled, en verso. Housed in a wooden frame with canvas liner and gilt sightedge. Sight: 11 1/4" H x 8 1/2" W. Framed: 16 5/8" H x 13 7/8" W.
Artist biography: Marjorie Johnson Lee moved from the countryside to Fort Worth, Texas in 1925 where she began private lessons with Mrs. G.W. Greathouse. She attended the Fort Worth School of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, and the Arts Student League in New York. Lee volunteer alongside many other artists in the U.S. Navy WAVES during WWII until the conclusion of the war. After her retirement from the NY Telephone Co. and divorce, she returned to Texas to paint until her death. (adapted from The Old Jail Art Center)
