After Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (French, 1835-1885), likely by Jules Desire Lubin (French, b. 1854) or Jean Lubin (French, mid-19th century), oil on board Impressionist painting depicting a French soldier in military uniform, standing with rifle strapped to his shoulder and trumpet in his right hand. Other soldiers stand in the background, under a grove of trees with tall grasses and a cloudy blue sky. Signed and dated lower right, "A de Neuville 1878" with additional inscription "D'apres" (after) above the signature and "J. Lubin" below. The Neuville signature is likely spurious. Housed in a molded and textured giltwood frame with foliate and cartouche motifs. Sight: 17 1/2" H x 9 1/74" W. Framed: 21 3/4" H x 13 1/2" W. Note: These paintings were a gift from the artist Jean or Jules Lubin to his friend, the French writer and mysticist Mr. J. Camille Chaigneau. They descended to Chaigneau's granddaughter, Vicki Rideaux Meche.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Dr. Andrew Wilkerson, by descent from the estate of Vernon and Vicki Meche, Iron City, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with slight warping and seam apparent in the board at the subject's left side measuring 15 1/2" L. Inpainting along this seam apparent under UV inspection.
