Continental school, mid 19th century, oil on tin painting depicting a dentist extracting a bloody tooth from a child, hunched over in pain. Both figures are framed by an architectural window opening in the foreground with the lower ledge holding items such as a partially filled bottle, bleeder bowl, and white cloth with a red wax seal; a green curtain, balcony, and open window are visible in the background. Unsigned. Housed in an ornate period molded giltwood frame with acanthus leaf, wheat grain, and beaded carved decorations. Sight: 9 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W. Frame: 15 1/2" H x 13 5/8" W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Thomas Bechtel, Memphis, TN.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with scattered surface abrasions and small flakes to paint, and scattered pitting of tin. Frame with scattered surface discoloration and some losses to gilt, largest measuring 3/4" x 3/8".
