Brodnax (1786-1834), member of the House of Delegates (1818-1819, 1830-1833) and of the Virginia constitutional convention of 1829, signed THE LAW OF EVIDENCE, Fifth Edition, by Lord Chief Baron Gilbert, printed in London, reprinted and sold by Joseph Cruikshank, Philadelphia, 1788. Hardcover octavo, 286 pages with additional Table of the Several Matters in the Foregoing Treatise, hardbound in brown leather with partial red leather label with gilt lettering, five raised hubs. Signed "William Brodnax/jus liber/July 1788" to front matter page with later signatures and "WILLIAM BRODNAX" ink stamp, front matter pages and title page.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Thomas Wellington Patton, Knoxville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Covers with expected wear, losses to leather, front hinge is loose from binding, corners bumped. Pages with toning, foxing spots, areas of dampstaining, mildew, and ink and pencil inscriptions from previous owners.
