Oil on canvas small scale portrait of a young child, possibly by Paul Gustav Fischer (Denmark, 1860-1934), depicting the artist's daughter, Harriet. Child painted with short blonde hair and blue eyes gazing directly at the viewer. She is attired in a simple dark green and rust colored dress and seated upon a cane backed chair. Unsigned. Housed in a giltwood frame with diamond carved frieze and beaded fillet. Pencil inscription, en verso of frame. Sight: 10" H x 7 1/2" W. Frame: 14 1/4" H x 11 3/4" W. Late 19th/early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Thomas Bechtel, Memphis, TN.
CONDITION: Overall craquelure with portions of the face and dress fluoresce under black light, indicating restoration, largest measuring 2 3/4" H x 1 3/4" W. Some abrasion to surface, particularly at the lower sight edge. Frame with losses to gilt, largest measuring 5/8" H x 3/4" W.
