Johan Gudmundsen-Holmgreen (Denmark, 1858-1912) oil on canvas portrait of Friedrich Nietzche (1844-1900). The philosopher is depicted as a brown-haired, mustached gentleman in a dark brown or black suit coat and white shirt, resting his face on his partially open left hand with a bas-relief classical side portrait in the background. Signed and dated "Gudmundsen-Holmgreen 1899" in orange above the subject's shoulder at the lower right. Handwritten label "Gudmundsen-Holmgreen" and additional numbered sticker, en verso of canvas. Housed in a modern ebonized wood frame with chrome painted filet with tulip carved decoration. Sight: 21 5/8" H x 16 1/2" W. Frame: 30 7/8" H x 25 3/4" W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Thomas Bechtel, Memphis, TN.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with scattered abrasion to paint concentrated to right border. Two small pinholes to lower-left corner. Signature and date partially obscured by frame; canvas has been restretched. Frame with overall craquelure and minor scattered surface scratches.
