American Federal inlaid slant front desk, cherry with white pine and poplar secondary. Plain dovetailed top with fall front having breadboard ends and fan inlay at each corner; front opens to a fitted interior having two rows of drawers in a three-over-five configuration, above five pigeonholes with serpentine valances. Four graduated dovetailed drawers, each with fan inlay to corners, brass bail pulls and escutcheons, atop a base with tall ogee bracket feet with spur returns. Chalk signature of previous owner inside case. 42" H x 39" W x 18 3/4" D. Mid-Atlantic, Late 18th century.
PROVENANCE: The Tina McWhorter Trust; from the collection of John and Tina McWhorter, Memphis, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Older refinish. Top back edge with an old replaced strip, approximately 1 " W. 1st, 3rd and 4th base drawers missing locks. Wear and losses along top edge of the fall front. Chest drawer sides have been built up from wear. Right rear foot with replaced glue blocks.
