New England oil on canvas folk portraits of Dr. John Cyrus Ealy (1813 – 1881) and his wife Anna Marie Clark Ealy (1815 – 1891). Dated "1847" and signed "E.S. ________ (last name illegible) en verso. Mrs. Ealy wears dangling earrings; both are seated against red upholstery and hold books. Each measures 27 1/8" H x 22" W sight; 33 3/4" H x 29" W framed. Biography: John Ealy was born in Shippensburg, PA and completed his medical education at the University of PA in Philadelphia. After school, he move the Schellsburg, PA where he met and married Anna Marie Clark in 1840. Together they reared seven children in Schellsburg where he enjoyed a long career. Condition: Mrs. Ealy with approx. 1" x 1" area of paint loss to upper right near head and scratch upper left quadrant. Dr. Ealy portrait has tear to canvas to upper left extending into his forehead and a large cross shaped tear in the lower left quadrant on his chest, by the book. Both with overall craquelure.
