Meyer R. Wolfe (Tennessee/New York, 1897-1995), pastel drawing depicting five men seated at a cafe table. Four of the men respond strongly as the man in the center gestures with his hands to make a point. Signed and dated 1951 lower right. Matted and framed under glass in a molded giltwood frame. Sight: 17 1/2 in. W x 14 1/2 in. D. Frame: 28 1/2 in. H x 22 1/2 in. W. Note: This painting was exhibited in the 2020 Meyer Wolfe retrospective at the Parthenon in Nashville. According to the catalog notes, Wolfe liked to call this painting -a nod to the cafes of Europe- “The Socialists”.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Lawrence Wolfe, Nashville, Tennessee, by descent from his uncle, the artist Meyer “Mike” Wolfe.
CONDITION: There is a crease or crack in the paper running the full height of the image. Otherwise excellent condition. Not examined out of frame.
