Laurits Sorensen Enslew (Germany, 1867-1912) oil on board painting titled "Ecce Homo" depicting Christ's face with a meditative expression and bleeding from the crown of thorns around his forehead. ("Ecce Homo" refers to the words spoken by Pontius Pilate when presenting Christ to a hostile crowd, after being crowned and scourged, in the final moments before His crucifixion). The painting is rendered with heavy detail and dramatic tenebrism, effects that convey Christ's profound pain and suffering. Signed L. Sorensen-Enslew lower right. Housed in a wood frame with pilaster style details, titled in lower margin. Sight: 11 7/8" H x 10 1/2" W. Framed: 22 7/8" H x 18 1/2" W. Late 19th/early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Thomas Bechtel, Memphis, TN.
CONDITION: Overall craquelure expected with age. Some minor abrasions and scratching, largest 2" on left hand side. Some inpainting to face visible under blacklight inspection. Frame with expected wear.
