Large group of twenty (20) 17th and 18th century portrait engravings. Subjects and engravers/artists include the Marquis de Lafayette by Vincenzo Vangelisti/Michael Honore Bounieu ("d'apres une Miniature," c. 1789); Phillip II, King of Spain (illustration to Emanuel van Meteren's 'Niederlandische Historien oder Geschichten" Antwerp, 1611); Christina, Queen of Sweden by Paulus Pontius (c. 1654); Elias Holl (1611); Robert D'Evreux, Comte d'Essex after Adrian van der Werff; Louis XIV by P. van Schuppen after I. Nocret; Thomas Wentworth after Anthony Van Dyck, Gaston de France – Duke of Orleans after Anthony van Dyck (c. 1675); Mademoiselle Sophie Louise Willielmine de la Font after Nicholas-Benjamin De la Pierre; Johann Gotthard von Muller by Ernst Morace after Johann Friedrich August Tischbein; Henry VII by P. Gunst after Adrian van der Werff; Joseph Roettiers by Cornelis Martinus Vermeulen after Nicolas de Largilliere (c. 1700); Domini de la Fond, Galli by P. Lombart after H. Gascard; Arthur Capel, Earl of Essex by Bernard Picart after Sir Peter Lely; and Madame de Montespan (mistress of Louis XIV, published by Etienne Picart, 1688). Also included are 4 portraits of actresses including Louise D'Oligny, "Mlle Renaut", "M. Cretu", and Sophie Arnould along with a framed print of Ernest of Hesse-Rheinfels, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel by P. Troschel (20 3/4" x 16"). Unframed dimensions of other prints range from 6 3/4" x 4 5/8" to 23 3/4" x 16 1/2".
CONDITION: Most with scattered foxing, light toning, and trimmed margins. Some with creases and small tears. Elias Holl engraving is fully adhered to blue paper backing. Arthur, Comte D'Essex print is adhered to beige paper along top margin edge. Joseph Roettiers portrait has large fold to upper edge and small tear. Louis XIV print has tape remnant upper left corner. Dampstaining to actress prints. Philip II print hinge mounted upper left edge. Ernest of Hesse-Rheinfels print has not been examined out of frame.
