THE ART OF THE AMERICAN WOOD ENGRAVER: FORTY INDIA PROOFS, to accompany the text of Philip Gilbert Hamerton, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1894. Hardcover folio, forty tipped in India proof paper plates, all but plates VI and VII pencil signed by engraver below the image, with numbered and titled mats with artist and engraver information, hardbound in three-quarter red leather with red cloth sides, gilt lettering to spine, five raised hubs, marbled paper pastedowns and end papers, ex libris plate to interior of front cover. 15 1/2" H x 12" W x 1 1/2" D.
CONDITION: Cover in overall good condition with wear, losses to hinges, general rubbing with some staining to cloth, corners bumped. Pages in overall good condition with light toning, some plate with minor tears due to separation at corners from tipped in mounting, Plate XXVI is completely loose. All plates are collated.
