Two (2) South American Madonna and Child Paintings including possible Cuzco School painting. 1st item: South American retablo, or Catholic folk art painting, on tin depicting a crowned Madonna and Christ child. The Madonna holds the deceased snake and floats above clouds. Mounted to a felt mat and housed in a gilt, carved, and painted frame under glass. Sight: 13 1/2" H x 9 3/4". Framed: 22 1/4" H x 18 1/4" W. 19th Century. 2nd item: Spanish Colonial, possibly Cuzco school, oil on canvas painting laid on board depicting the Madonna and Child crowned and adorned in ornate, royal garments. Housed in a carved giltwood frame. Sight: 20" H x 14 1/2" W. Framed: 24" H x 18 1/2" W. Possibly 18th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Thomas Bechtel, Memphis, TN.
CONDITION: 1st item: Overall good condition with oxidation to the metal, especially around the perimeter of the image. Frame with overall wear. 2nd item: Significant warping to board, crack in upper left hand corner, approximately 5". Some paint loss to upper margin and fleabite losses overall, expected with age. Light wear to frame.
