Southern Federal eagle inlaid cherry blanket chest, possibly Middle Tennessee or Kentucky, poplar secondary. Rectangular molded top with breadboard ends and original strap hinges above a case with exposed dovetail construction; one full dovetailed drawer with brass bail pulls above a molded base having tall dovetailed bracket feet. Front case lock and drawer both have eagle inlaid escutcheons. 34 3/4" H x 47 1/2" W x 20 3/4" D. Circa 1810.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Raymond White, purchased from D. Lehman and Sons, Midway, Ky.
CONDITION: Chest is refinished with shrinkage cracks and several restorations and patches including internal butterfly restoration visible from the case interior. Dovetailed feet and blocking have likely been removed, refinished, and re-surfaced or later replacements. Till with replaced top. Interior of chest and drawer with staining. Drawer sides appear to have been sanded. Repair to back at hinge. Bottom board of chest has been replaced.
