Pair of English School oil on canvas portrait paintings, depicting a lady and gentleman, presumably a wife and husband. The male subject is depicted as a young man with brown hair and blue eyes wearing a black suit, yellow waistcoat, white shirt and cravat ascot tie against a interior backdrop with red drape to the right margin, the female subject is depicted as a young woman with brown hair and blue eyes and wearing a black dress with lace collar and sleeves, seated with her hands crossed against a naturalistic background. Housed in elaborate Louis XIV style giltwood frames with carved shell and acanthus leaf corners. Sight: 29" H x 24 1/8" W. Framed: 40 3/4" H x 36" W. Provenance: From the estate of a Signal Mountain, Tennessee physician.
CONDITION: Both paintings in overall good condition and with overall light craquelure. Male portrait with patch en verso and remnants of an old stamp. Areas of fluorescence under UV light around left side of man's head, some to background and face and male portrait. Areas of fluorescence to the left side background and very slight areas of fluorescence to female portrait to left side of face and one area of the neck. See UV light photos for reference. Frame in overall good condition with some repaired breaks.
