Large British School, 19th century, oil on canvas landscape depicting a stone mill and two figures resting on rocks nearby, surrounded by dense foliage, under a cloudy blue sky. Unsigned. Label with title "Figures by a Mill" en verso and chalk inscription CB PAYNE. Housed in a period giltwood frame with acanthus leaf decoration, circa 1880. Sight: 35 3/4" H x 55 1/8" W. Framed: 46" H x 66" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Margaret Harold Roberts, Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with craquelure and one area of paint loss, left center approximately 1/4". Stencil mark en verso indicates painting has been professionally lined and restored by Richard Keene LTD, Iron Gate, Derby. Scattered in-painting, especially in upper left corner and along repaired cracking down center of work, approximately 28" long.
