American or British School oil on canvas painting depicting a stag or elk wading in a body of water, the opposite shore visible beneath a slightly cloudy, early morning blue sky in the background. Signed "A. Nicholson" lower left, faintly signed on canvas verso, "Stag….after…..1886". Housed in a giltwood Louis XIII style frame. Sight: 13 1/4" H x 19 1/4" W. Framed: 21 1/4" H x 27 1/4" W. Late 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of David B. Person, Holly Springs, Mississippi.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with areas of inpainting, largest 13 1/4" x 1 1/4", primarily to edges of canvas. 1/8" puncture, top left of canvas with surface abrasions, largest 1 1/4", top and bottom left of canvas. Paint flakes/losses, largest 1/4" to moose. Frame with natural age shrinkage, areas of loss, largest 1 1/4" to gilt, old repairs with overpainting to each corner.
