Miniature watercolor bust length portrait depicting a young lady with brown upswept curls, wearing a black dress with lace collar and mourning brooch. Reserve of gold metal frame features an ornate monogram made of hair. Unsigned. 2 3/4" H x 2 1/2"W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Tinka Brown, Nashville, Tennessee. Mrs. Brown was a descendant of Abram Maury, founder of Franklin, Tennessee. The portrait descended in her family, but the subject's identity is unknown.
CONDITION: Discoloration to back of frame. Lower part of glass over the monogram (back side of frame) is pressed inward and does not seal tightly. Dark shadowing across one eye and neck may be due to moisture damage. 3 noticeable tiny flakes to background: 2 at lower right edge, 1 about 1/4" from subject's jaw (left side of portrait). Some trapped debris under glass. The painting has not been examined out of the frame.
