John Henry Niemeyer (Connecticut/New York/Germany, 1839-1932) watercolor and gouache on paper painting depicting an allegorical mourning scene of two young women standing before a white surface covered with flowers, possibly a crypt, the woman in a white dress receiving a bouquet of flowers from the woman in a navy blue dress, set against a landscape with mountains visible in the distance. Signed “JHNiemeyer” lower right with possible erased signature above. Multiple ink inscription with artist’s information and previous owner information en verso. Housed under glass in a Louis XIII style giltwood frame. Sight: 16 3/4″ H x 13 1/2″ W. Framed: 22 3/4″ H x 19 3/4″ W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition with horizontal crease across lower margin of sheet. Not examined outside of frame. Frame with natural age shrinkage, areas of loss, largest 1″, to gilt.
